Over 300 million Indians live in urban areas, of which one third are estimated as living below the poverty line. Population pressure, deterioration in the physical environment, little access to safe drinking water, traffic congestion, lack of basic amenities and many such problems plague most urban Indians. Despite urban India’s significant contribution to the economy, it faces serious problems. Slums have grown in almost all major cities due to the inability of major chunks of the population to afford accommodation in planned areas of the cities
A large number of Indian cities and towns need adequate infrastructure facilities, specifically in the areas of water management, roads, transportation, housing, sanitation and sewerage
